URGE SECRETARY CLINTON TO ENSURE ASSISTANCE REACHES THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN

ACT NOW: Please read and sign the below petition asking Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to improve relations with Pakistan.

-----

No other country has suffered as much as Pakistan for being an ally of the United States during the Cold War and in the war on terror.  Support the Council on Pakistan Relations’ efforts to ensure that U.S. foreign policy promotes democracy, stability and prosperity in Pakistan.  Your action is needed to work together to guarantee that U.S. foreign assistance is transparent and benefits the people of Pakistan; that the U.S. brings India to the table to resolve the dispute over Kashmir; and that the U.S. and Pakistan works to overcome the mistrust that has characterized relations between the two countries.

In a letter sent earlier this month, CPR called on Secretary Clinton to adopt a regional approach to South Asia that brings India and Afghanistan to the table to resolve the dispute over Kashmir and the Durand Line, respectively.  The letter also provides recommendations on how to make the $7.5 billion in U.S. assistance to Pakistan have an actual impact on people’s daily lives by focusing on large “signature” projects in the areas of electricity, water, agriculture, health and education.  Finally, the letter calls on the Obama Administration to include Pakistani Americans in the public policy process to provide input and advice on how the U.S. could best engage Pakistan.    [READ THE FULL LETTER TO SECRETARY CLINTON HERE]

Dear Madam Secretary Clinton-

I urge you to support the Council on Pakistan Relations' (CPR) efforts to strengthen U.S.-Pakistan relations and ensure that U.S. foreign assistance actually reaches the people of Pakistan. For too long the United States has taken Pakistan for granted. As a result, mistrust and deep suspicion on both sides has built up over the years.

The U.S. must now work to ensure that U.S. foreign assistance to Pakistan is transparent and that it reaches the people of Pakistan by focusing on "signature" projects in the areas of electricity, water, agriculture, health and education.

Additionally, the U.S. should adopt a regional approach to South Asia and bring India to the table to resolve the dispute over Kashmir which continues to undermine the region’s progress towards peace, improved security and cooperation.
